As winter arrives, the idea of higher utility bills can put a damper on the festive season. Keeping your home warm without breaking the bank becomes even more important. We’re happy to share some practical tips designed for apartment dwellers to find the right balance between comfort and cost-effectiveness. Check out these 5 tips to save on your winter utility bills!

Start with your thermostat!

Set the thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature and dress in warm clothing. Getting cozy with blankets is one of the best parts of winter!

Pro tip: When leaving your home for a few hours or going to bed at night, lower the thermostat by a few degrees.

Blinds and curtains hold power!

Keep blinds, shades, and curtains open during the day to allow sunlight to warm your home, then close them at night for insulation.

Get energy efficient with your appliances

  • Use energy-efficient light bulbs, especially in lighting fixtures that are used extensively.
  • Microwaves use less energy than stoves and conventional ovens.
  • Wash only full loads of clothing, but don’t overload the machine.
  • Use the right amount of detergent when doing laundry (using too much may waste energy).

Be smart with your heating sources!

If you use portable electric or kerosene heaters, be sure to use them carefully. Keep them away from draperies, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Lighting and unplugging make a difference

Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms. Use Christmas lights only after dark and turn them off before bed. It is also helpful to unplug cell phone chargers, rechargeable batteries, other electronic devices, and small appliances when you are not using them. Those devices still use power when plugged in, even if not in use!
